General Meeting Notes:

  • Spring event — in touch with SPJ President from last year to review logistics
    • Very early planning stages
  • Speed Friending event on Thursday, February 13th at the Teacher’s College
    • Drinks and food provided
    • Tickets will drop in the CJS WhatsApp on Monday, February 10th at 6:30 p.m.
  • A journalist from India is coming to CJS to talk about a photo project they produced
    • Potential collaboration with the Climate School and the Climate Reporter Network
    • February 27th or 28th (TBD)

Academic Affairs Chair:

Student Life Chair:

  • Code Switch speaker collab with SPJ
    • Thursday, February 13th at 12 p.m. in the World Room
  • Creating a VOX Pop for Black History Month
    • Wanting to do a similar project for Women’s History Month
  • Color for a Cause coming back soon!

Speaker’s Director:

  • Sports panel is set!
    • Tuesday, February 25th at 12:15
    • two panelists confirmed already — hoping for a third
  • Interest expressed by students for an event featuring journalists who became authors
  • Maybe working on a panel on writing satire/funny writing
  • Students expressing an interest on an event about how to approach a media-trained person
    • Looking further into this

Film/Documentary Chair:

The film/documentary committee is run by Mason Leath. Mason can be reached at mpl2159@columbia.edu.
  • Collaboration with speaker’s committee to screen “The Last Seawomen”
    • This would be followed by a discussion with the filmmaker
    • Date TBD — preferably late March/early April

Community Service Chair:

The community service committee is run by Augostina Mallous. Augostina can be reached at am6521@columbia.edu.
  • Feminine hygiene drive is a go!
    • Setting up a drop-off box in Stabile or Brown where people can drop products off
    • Box will be there for a few weeks and then brought to the Covenant House
  • Working to set up more outings to volunteer at the food bank
    • Preferably after master’s projects are due
