Meeting Updates

Below, you can see what each committee is working on at SPJ. Each update reflects what was discussed at this week’s meeting. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to the committee heads with questions! Past meeting notes can be found linked at the bottom of this page.

Week of September 30

Academic Affairs Chair:

The academic affairs committee is run by Megha Gupta. Megha can be reached at mg4771@columbia.edu.
  • First meeting with the committee will be Thursday, October 3 at 5 p.m.
  • SPJ Board will be meeting with Dean Tu possibly on Monday, October 7

Student Life Chair:

The student life committee is run by Laïny Jernidier. Laïny can be reached at lainy.jernidier@columbia.edu.
  • Committee has not met yet
  • Trying to coordinate more fun and lighthearted events to engage with students
    • Want to keep things as free and accessible as possible (budget restrictions)
  • Brainstorming ideas for a Halloween event

Speaker’s Director:

The speaker’s committee is run by Reeno Hashimoto. Reeno can be reached at rh2984@columbia.edu.
  • Committee has not met yet
  • Working on coordinating a panel on nature journalism
    • Trying to figure out how to host this (room restrictions; possibly on Zoom)
    • Already have a moderator in place
  • Aiming to host a program once a month

Film/Documentary Chair:

The film/documentary committee is run by Mason Leath. Mason can be reached at mpl2159@columbia.edu.
  • Committee has not met yet
  • Still trying to get in contact with people to coordinate screenings

Community Service Chair:

The community service committee is run by Augostina Mallous. Augostina can be reached at am6521@columbia.edu.
  • Committee is meeting Thursday, October 3 at 5 p.m.
  • Brainstorming ideas of who to coordinate service events with
    • Trinity Place Center (beginning stages)
    • Local High School Newspapers
  • Events that utilize our skills as journalists to give back
