General Meeting Notes:
- Working harder on general outreach to students who signed up to be committee members
- Working on creating events with affiliation groups in conjunction with SPJ Committees
Meeting with Dean Tu:
- We only have one interview currently: need more spaces for this
- We don’t have lockers for students to store their camera/video equipment: huge necessity for students
- The Deans have a cabinet meeting every Tuesday to discuss issues within the school and student body concerns
- Dean Tu wants more emphasis on casual events where students can interact with each other
- We are working on this
- Also working on events that do not involve journalism
- Possibly an idea of creating a better lounge space for students
- Board games, downtown trips, etc.
Academic Affairs Chair:
The academic affairs committee is run by Megha Gupta. Megha can be reached at mg4771@columbia.edu.
- Coordinating a social media noon block workshop
- Creating a folder of academic resources to be shared with all students
- When completed this will also be linked here on the website
- Early stage planning of an event with the academic committee in association with women in media
- Trying to coordinate with the Dart Center
Student Life Chair:
The student life committee is run by Laïny Jernidier. Laïny can be reached at lainy.jernidier@columbia.edu.
- Halloween event idea being worked on:
- Movie and Halloween snacks (no costumes)
- Wear a color for a cause day
- Creating smaller groups of people from different programs to promote interaction
Speaker’s Director:
The speaker’s committee is run by Reeno Hashimoto. Reeno can be reached at rh2984@columbia.edu.
- First event confirmed!
- Event on October 30th from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the World Room
- Discussion with Lewis Simons, a Pulitzer Prize winner, foreign correspondent, and journalist with National Geographic
- Simons will be having a conversation with Columbia Professor Michael Shapiro

Film/Documentary Chair:
The film/documentary committee is run by Mason Leath. Mason can be reached at mpl2159@columbia.edu.
- Documentary “Stripped for Parts” could be an option for a screening
- Had a showing of this last year, and Columbia has the rights to show it for free to students
- Hoping to have a screening before Thanksgiving
Community Service Chair:
The community service committee is run by Augostina Mallous. Augostina can be reached at am6521@columbia.edu.
- In the process of coordinating an event with Food Bank for New York City
- Sent out a poll to students along with information about the outreach initiatives to see which days and times work best
- Options include:
- Community food distribution which includes distributing grocery bags to community members
- Community meal service which includes welcoming guests and serving hot meals to community members
- Exact date and time for event will be determined based on student poll
