What: Lucille’s Ball, the J-school’s annual social gala held each winter at the end of the first term.

The J-school lecture hall

Get excited, Lucille’s Ball is just about a month away. Here are answers to some of your questions about the J-school’s biggest social event of the year:

How much is the event?
Through the generosity of deans of the school and the SPJ Columbia chapter, there is no charge this year for admission for J-school students, faculty or staff. There is a $10 entrance fee for significant others accompanying J-schoolers. Unfortunately, there is a cost for drinks. There will be some free food but if you are the ravenous type, you should probably eat before the event.

What is the attire?
It’s what we call “reporter chic,” a slight upgrade from jeans and casual clothes. There will be a wide range of how dressy students will get but generally it’s a tie for men, dress or equivalent for woman.

Where is the ball?
At none other than the J-school’s very own Lecture Hall, located on the third floor of the building.

What is the Roast & Toast?
It’s the one time of the year where we get to parody our professors and deans all in the name of fun — well maybe, in skits, impersonations, top ten lists and songs. It’s the first thing on our program so get there early so we can see those great impersonations of the deans, and your RW1 professor.

Who is invited?
Although this is an event to celebrate the J-school, all current students from all of the programs are invited along with all faculty and staff.

Why is it named Lucille’s Ball?
The school is paying it’s homage to it’s founder Joseph Pulitzer indirectly, it’s the name of his daughter.

Who do I contact if I have more questions?
You can email social chair Purvi Thacker at
