ALUMNI
TRIVIA
At home among the Columbia
liberals: Patrick J. Buchanan J'62, is perhaps the most visible alum
of the late 1990s. In addition to being a nightly presence on CNN's Crossfire,
he was a perennial presidential candidate. In 1999, when he switched from
the Republican Party to the Reform Party, he mentioned the J-school in
the opening minute of his press conference: "As perhaps the only
Barry Goldwaterite in the graduating class of Columbia Journalism School..."
In his 1990 book, Right From The Beginning, he has an entire chapter about
his time at the J-school, "Columbia Class of '62." His Master's
Project was on Cuban-Canadian Trade.
Alumni & Alumni: In August 1997, Jennet Conant created a media
storm by writing a Vanity Fair cover story alleging that Mayor Rudy Giuliani
was having an affair with his press secretary. The J-school connection:
Giuliani is married to Donna Hanover Giuliani J'70 and Jennet
Conant J'83, is married to Steve Kroft J'75 of 60 Minutes.
Going
Bananas: Banana Republic and the Republic of Tea were founded by Mel
Ziegler J'68, and his wife Patricia. Ziegler is a former newspaper
reporter and his wife, a former newspaper illustrator. They now run ZoZa.com,
the first proprietary apparel brand launched online. Here's the Banana
Republic story: In the late 70s Ziegler discovered a British Burma jacket
in a Sydney, Australia, "disposal" store and, with a little alteration
by his wife, it
became the perfect replacement for his surplus jacket. Mrs. Ziegler played
down the jacket's military origins and played up its comfortable, everyday,
utilitarian nature. Family and friends liked the look, and sure enough,
the Banana Republic concept was born. Today the company is a subsidiary
of Gap Inc. and has more than 230 stores in the United States and nine
in Canada. Ziegler is co-author (with his wife) of "The Republic of Tea:
How an Idea Becomes a Business" (Currency/Doubleday, 1992, $22.50). Read
more about them in ZoZa's Webzine.
Legendary
names: The J-school has spawned at least a couple of world-famous
corporate names...
